Weight off your mind
Weight Off Your Mind
By Jan Duncan , Adv. Dip . Hypnosis , AMD
In the middle of winter , enjoying all those hearty meals and yummy puddings , and nice hot milky drinks to ward off the chill , the last thing we are thinking about is extra weight . Soon , however , it will be spring , and while a young man’s fancy might turn to thoughts of love , the fairer sex is more likely to be worrying where to put the avoir du pois when it is time to wear their bathers .
When it comes to being overweight , there are many factors to take into account . Is the person using food as a substitute for love and affection that is missing in their life ? Are they trying to become unattractive to the opposite sex ? Could it just be the ingrained habit of cleaning every scrap off their plate “ because of the starving children in Africa “ that they were made to feel guilty over as a child ?
For many of us whose parents experienced times of hardship and deprivation , we grew up with the “ waste not want not “ habit , even though in these modern times we cannot really comprehend what they endured .
Most overweight people have already tried many of the weight loss regimes that are constantly in women’s magazines or the TV . Expensive supplements , rigidly controlled portions , bland and boring shakes .
Sometimes you can hit on a plan that works really well for you , but the minute that you deviate , all your hard work disappears and you are the same size as before , or worse , even heavier !
Hypnosis can be a very effective way to permanently alter the way you view food , leading to healthier eating habits for the rest of your life .
The most important thing to ask yourself before embarking on any programme is ‘ Do I really want to lose weight ? ‘ If the answer is really ‘ No “ then it doesn’t matter what you try , you will always find a way for it to fail .
If , however , you genuinely do want to shed excess weight , hypnosis could be just what you are looking for . It is not a ‘ magic bullet ‘ but it can make weight loss easy , and permanent , by changing the way you eat , how much you want to eat , and helping you to prefer the sorts of foods that you would be healthier eating .
When you feel hunger , what in fact is happening is that a tiny sensor at the base of the brain , called the hypothalamus , is sending a message to let you know that it is time to eat . About twenty minutes after it has told you that you need to eat , it sends another message telling you that it is satisfied , and the hunger feeling subsides . Now just think of all the times when you have felt hungry , but have not been able to eat , and the hunger pangs went away .This is important to remember , because now you can realise that it’s not how much you eat during that twenty minutes that satisfies your hunger . Your hypothalamus will allow you to eat as much or a little as you like before sending the exact same message !
Naturally you will need to make better choices of foods to eat , even hypnosis cannot make you lose weight on a fast food diet , or one full of cool drinks , cakes , or chocolate . Hypnosis can help you to prefer those foods that are healthy and beneficial for you , and make you satisfied with smaller portions of fresh healthy foods .
As you begin to lose the weight that has been with you for so long , you will feel better about yourself , more confident and energetic , no longer having to carry around that excess fat . As you feel better , , you will become more determined to increase that feeling of control , more motivated to become that person who has the body that you want and deserve . This does not mean that you have to forgo forever those foods that you love , but they will become more of an occasional treat than a daily consolation , and that is how you will prefer it .
Hand in glove with healthier food choices goes the need for exercise – there is no need to fear becoming a crazed gym junkie , but enjoying a little moderate sensible exercise will naturally become a part of your day.
This will in turn boost your metabolism to speed your weight loss even further .
Imagine the results you’d have if you combined hypnosis with a personal trainer or an exercise physiologist who can tailor a regime to give you the body you have always dreamed of .
The Subiaco office of Change Your Mind , Change Your Life Hypnosis has the services of just such a person ! Kati Elliot of Maximise Your Metabolism is a graduate of University of Leipzig who qualified with a Bachelor of Physiology and Human Movement . With a simple, non invasive breathing test , Kati can assess your metabolism in it’s current state and advise the changes you need to make to your diet and exercise habits in order to become slim and healthy . Jan and Linda are both highly trained hypnotists who can clear old emotional issues that may be contributing to your weight problems , and then give your motivation a boost to help you reach your weightloss goals easily and comfortably.
Maximum gain for minimum pain ! Wether you have a specific goal in mind , for example a wedding or other special date , or you simply want to lose a few pounds to feel more comfortable in yourself , we can help you . HYPNOSIS FACTS AND MYTHS
There are a lot of myths surrounding hypnosis , from the old chestnut that you can become “ lost in trance ‘ to the idea that somehow all your deepest secrets will somehow come out without your knowing it .
Hypnosis is not like biological sleep , that is , you are awake and perfectly aware of everything around you during a hypnotic trance , but you are focused on the hypnotists voice .
People who are hypnotised do not lose control of themselves and are quite capable of saying no or terminating the session at any time . They cannot be made to do anything that conflicts with their values or that is detrimental to themselves .
During a trance , unless specifically requested by the person to be hypnotised , there is actually no talking on their part . Communication is done by finger signals indicating simple yes or no answers , usually regarding depth of trance and willingness to accept the suggestions agreed upon beforehand .
Hypnosis cannot enable people to perform impossible feats of strength , endurance , learning or sensory acuity , but it can enable people to achieve their maximum potential by helping them to focus on their goals and by removing psychological barriers to success that usually manifest as self doubt and lack of confidence . Sometimes the only barrier to achievement is belief in yourself , and hypnosis can remove the self defeating programmes that prevent you from reaching whatever heights you are capable of .
Hypnosis can enhance medical and psychological treatments . The International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis found that hypnotic suggestions relieved pain in 75% of 933 subjects participating in 27 different experiments . The pain relieving effect of hypnosis is often substantial , and in some cases the degree of relief matches …..that of morphene …and can boost the effectiveness of psychotherapy for some conditions . Being happy in yourself
BEING HAPPY IN YOURSELF
By Jan Duncan Adv . Dip Hypnosis , AMD , TFT
It can be very easy to fall into the trap of expecting more and more of ourselves in order to meet society’s criteria for success .
This success often comes at a hidden cost . Working longer hours sometimes for not much more money costs precious family time .
The trappings of success , nice house , flash car , the latest home theatre , all have to be paid for , and with the cost of basic foods and petrol escalating , not to mention rents and mortgages , we find ourselves in a seemingly endless cycle of work , snatching moments with family , sleeping and bill paying .
It is no wonder that there is a huge movement of people
‘ downsizing ‘ . Many people are taking a good look at what they have , what they want , and what they can let go of to get it .
The biggest gain for most people who do choose to downsize is time . Time to be with their children and partners . Time to spend on their interests , just being themselves , with no deadlines , quotas , or other stresses .
If you are beginning to have thoughts like ‘’ Is this all there is? ‘’
then perhaps hypnosis could help you to gain some clarity .
It may not be timely for you to quit or change your job , work less and play more , but you can get some of the benefits of such a laid back lifestyle by an occasional session of hypnosis . Hypnosis can help you to enjoy your life more , to cope with the pressures of daily living until you are ready to live the simple life for real .
Being happy in yourself and not allowing pressure to spoil what time you do have to spare will make life much more enjoyable for you , and for the ones you share life with .
If you change your mind , it can change your life .
Can hypnosis help me

Most people associate hypnosis with stage hypnosis and have heard of people using it to quit smoking and reduce their weight . However the applications for hypnosis are endless and also include ;
confidence boosting / self esteem ; stress / anxiety / panic attacks / PTSD ; insomnia – sleep onset , duration and quality ; depression / mood swings / grief ; pain control and management ; fears and phobias ; nail biting / nerves ; sports performance ; asthma / breathing problems ; erectile dysfunction/ male and female sexual issues ; jealousy , anger , envy , guilt ; rebuilding relationships ; increasing motivation /removing procrastination ; examination jitters / good study habits ; stuttering / voice clarity and projection / public speaking ; optimizing immune function ; regression / releasing the past ,and many other issues .
Hypnosis is being used increasingly in the workplace to create a smoke – free environment and to reduce and manage stress , to increase salesmanship confidence and for effective team building .
Hypnosis is extremely effective in treating a wide variety of problems , frequently providing relief when other means have failed .
Hypnosis has been accepted by mainstream medical institutions which reflects its effectiveness as a form of allied therapy . Officially recognized by the American Medical Association in 1958
And given the support of the US National Institute of Health ( NIH ) for cancer pain and other pain conditions , there’s little doubt about it’s enormous contribution to healthcare .
Research from Harvard Medical School and other institutions demonstrate that hypnosis is a process of mind over body where physiological changes occur which activate certain parts of the brain, including that portion which is responsible for focused attention . Guided by the therapists words , you drift into a very deeply relaxed yet very focused state where your conscious mind ‘ steps aside ‘ allowing the subconscious mind to accept positive and helpful suggestions .
Hypnosis greatly improves your well-being , corrects unwanted behaviours and habits , and clears blockages . It’s easy –

Hypnotherapy for depression in men
DEPRESSION IN MEN
THE HIDDEN EPIDEMIC

There is much more in the news these days about men’s depression and that can only be a good thing . With encouragement , and with people like the former Premier being open about his own struggle with this debilitating problem , perhaps more men will decide that it is ok to seek help .
It is not surprising that many men are finding it hard to cope in this day and age . So many of the accepted strictures of our society have changed or been abandoned , that many men feel out of their depth , not really knowing what their role is or how to react in situations that previously rarely existed .
Today’s workplace is vastly different from that of years gone by , when your first job would often see you to retirement . These days it is such a competitive market with deadlines and upskilling , not to mention the dreaded ‘ bottom line ‘ that sees many good employees out of work to increase profitability . The story of the chap who still takes his lunch , and his briefcase , and spends his day in the park because he is too ashamed to tell his wife he is redundant is sadly not so far fetched .
Then there are the male / female dynamics of modern life to contend with . The time when the little woman stayed at home to be cherished and provided for is long gone . Indeed , many men find themselves at home and their wives the main breadwinner . While some men may relish this role reversal , for some it is anything but a happy change and can lead to feelings of uselessness and frustration .
What is or is not politically correct in relationships seems to be changing every five minutes , and lots of single men think it’s all too hard , and opt for other pursuits than dating , which can lead to loneliness later in life .
Then there are the family men for whom life has become a struggle to service the spiralling costs of bringing up and educating children . It is hard enough when all the children are healthy , but what about the difficulties you face when one or more of your children are special needs kids , or have a serious or life threatening condition that requires constant care , sometimes at the expense of everyone else in the family .
It is still not acceptable to show feelings of rage or frustration , or fear and grief , to many men . They try to soldier on even when their burdens could make a stone cry . Many deal with their problems by drowning them in alcohol , or squashing them down with food , or by plain denial .
Hypnosis can be very beneficial for depression , and men seem to like the fact that they don’t have to pour their hearts out to a therapist in order to effect change . Hypnosis can act as a pressure valve for the subconscious mind , allowing a safe release of pent up feelings , so that a calmer and more optimistic state of mind is achieved .
Whatever the reason for depression , whether or not it seems to be a minor or a major thing , it is nevertheless a very real and debilitating condition . Statistics prove that when treated it can be overcome , but if left , can persist and even worsen over time .
Hypnosis is a gentle , non-invasive drug free alternative that can leave you feeling more positive , more able to cope , and more in control of your life .

Diabetes management with hypnotherapy
DIABETES MANAGEMENT
WITH HYPNOTHERAPY
Jan Duncan , Adv Dip Hypnosis , CMAHA , MCCH , PHWA
“ A renewed vitality and zest for life- with more energy and fewer sick days – can be the immediate payoff for people who improve their control of type 2 diabetes “ reported Donald C. Simonson , MD , associate professor at the Harvard Medical School , in a recent interview .
“ Such immediate benefits go beyond the many studies that have shown improved control reduces the long-term risk of life – threatening diabetes complications and could help motivated people to take stronger action to reduce their blood glucose levels . “ he explained .
The doctor was referring to a study that involved nearly 700 men and women at 62 sites in nine countries across the world , that clearly demonstrated that an association between improved control and enhanced quality of life is consistent , stable and durable across cultural and linguistic boundaries .
The researchers ‘ piggy-backed ‘ the psychological study onto a phase III randomized , double-blind , placebo-controlled clinical trial designed to evaluate the impact of various doses of an investigational drug , nateglinide , in reducing blood glucose levels .
A total of 694 men and women , average age 58 , and with type 2 diabetes , were enrolled in nine countries – Canada , the USA , France , Germany , Norway , Finland , Poland , Switzerland , and Russia.
Participants were primarily Caucasian , ( 87% ) married ( 71 % ) employed ( 54 % ) and college educated ( 54 % )
Glucose levels were checked with HbA1c blood tests , an indicator of diabetes control over the prior two to three months .At the outset , the average HbA1c was 8.1 % – higher than ideal . After six months , the average HbA1c was down to 7.3-7.6 % for those taking any dose of the active drug , compared to placebo .
“ Participants reported significant improvement in their quality of life in many areas and the degree of improvement was positively correlated with the degree of change in glycemic control .“ Dr Simonson said .
The most highly correlated improvements were seen in :
- Incidence of symptoms
- General perceived health
- Vitality
- Emotional ties
- Psychological wellbeing
- Overall quality of life
- Symptoms interfering with daily life
- Symptoms causing distress
Many people with type 2 diabetes can find it a difficult adjustment to make , and often become depressed and even self-destructive .
Diabetes management using hypnosis is a simple and positive way to enhance wellness and the quality of your life . It is important to mention that these programmes will only be offered with the approval of your treating physician , who will outline your regime .
Hypnosis , simply put , helps to you comply with your doctors orders in such a way as to put you in control of your condition .
In this instance especially , changing your mind will change your life .
Is stress making you fat?
Is Stress Making YOU Fat ?

Much has been said about the effects that stress has on the human body . We are all aware of the obvious results , such as depression , hyper-anxiety , sleeplessness , road rage etc , and the often self destructive ways of managing stress , like drinking a little too much , or self medicating with food , comfort food being the preferred soporific for our ragged nerves .
Few people realise that adrenal burnout can be the result of prolonged low-grade stress . Dramatic life-upheavals tend to gain more sympathy and attention than the misery of a hated job , a difficult family situation , or some other long term but hard to escape from plight .
Even without the challenges we face through the different stages of life , our modern pace of living provides us with enormous amounts of stress . A difficult job , dealing with ageing parents at the same time as trying to cope with a teenager’s forays into ‘ life ‘ , perhaps trying to handle a bereavement or health crisis of yourself or someone close to you ….the list goes on .
Putting a happy face on an unbearable situation simply buries the stress which has a nasty habit of re-emerging as health problems at a later time . The slow weight gain , gradually getting less and less sleep , irritability , lack of libido , low energy , mood swings….the slow erosion of quality of life until you just can’t remember when you felt really well , not to mention happy !
There are a number of strategies that can be employed to regain some enjoyment of life and a return to better health . A good naturopath can assess the best way that nutrition and supplements could improve your biology and thence your overall health . Toxic overload , too much copper , hormone imbalance including cortisol elevation all lead to health conditions that leave you feeling emotionally and physically exhausted .
Cortisol plays a vital role in helping you to meet challenging situations , but it is the prolonged production of this hormone that does the damage . It can slow natural healing and cell replacement ; destroys muscle and bone ; impairs digestion , metabolism and mental function ; interferes with healthy endocrine function leading to all kinds of conditions including poor fertility , thyroid imbalance and endometriosis . Cortisol also stimulates the release of glucose , fats and amino acids for energy production - and stimulates your appetite !
The kind of fat that will accumulate because of this stress induced appetite will naturally concentrate itself around your abdomen . As if you didn’t have enough to be stressed about already !
To address the emotional aspect of long term stress , hypnosis is a wonderful adjunct to any health improvement strategy . By reducing or removing the emotional causes for high stress levels , or by helping to change the perception of an unavoidable but unchanging situation , hypnosis can speed the return to a much happier life .

Mothers and hypnotherapy
MOTHERS
The word ‘Mother ‘ evokes different feelings in all of us . It is a very emotive word , and can mean feelings of warmth and safety , or loss and rejection , depending on the kind of mothering we experience .
As we age , we can become more forgiving , perhaps , of the perceived ‘ mistakes ‘ that our mothers made in bringing us up , after all , we don’t come with instructions , and most mothers really do love us to bits .
But what about those of us who had neglect or abuse from our mothers , unintentional or deliberate ? Those whose mothers were damaged by their own childhoods , and who were unable or unwilling to offer the nurturing and love that every child needs .
Our first impressions of life actually begin before birth , according to cellular biologist Bruce Lipton PhD in his book , The Biology of Belief . Dr Lipton is an internationally recognised authority on bridging science and spirit , and his breakthrough studies on the cell membrane presaged the new science of Epigenics and made him a leading voice in the New Biology .
Dr Peter W. Nathanielsz writes in his book ‘ Life in the Womb ; the
Origin of Health and Disease ‘, that the quality of life in the womb
…..programs our susceptibility to…stroke , diabetes, obesity and a multitude of other conditions in later life . It is now known that the growth of the foetus is influenced by the emotional state of its mother , a child conceived in a warm , loving and peaceful environment will develop differently to one whose mother is constantly fearful or stressed . In stressful environments , foetal blood preferentially flows to the muscles and hindbrain , providing nutritional requirements needed by the arms and legs and by the region of the brain responsible for life saving reflex behaviour .’
This is Nature’s way of ensuring the survival of our offspring .
If a child is going to find itself in the same environment as its mother , then this kind of development prepares it to deal more effectively with future situations .
Once a child is born , the kind of nurturing given can profoundly impact on the fundamental ‘ truths ‘ that we hold about ourselves .
Some behaviours are innate ; consider the infant’s abilty to suckle , to move away from fire , and to swim automatically when placed in water . But the programming given by usually well meaning parents hoping to prod their children into better behaviour can have the reverse effect .
Evolution has endowed our brains with the ability to download an unimaginable number of behaviours and beliefs into our memory as a way of ensuring the survival of the species . Children take in everything without the critical faculty that develops later in life , that allows us to reject ‘ facts ‘ that we don’t like or that we know are false or erroneous .
This can be measured by electroencephalogram , or EEG . Between birth and two years of age , the human brain predominantly operates at the lowest EEG frequency , known as delta . Between two and six , it becomes theta , which explains why children can absorb the incredible amount of information that they need to survive and thrive . From there , children are usually in an alpha state , until they are around twelve years old . Alpha is equated with a calm consciousness , an awareness of self .
Hypnotherapists drop their client’s brain activity into theta and delta because these low frequency brainwaves put their patients into a more suggestible , programmable state , so it’s easy to see how children so quickly absorb directly into their subconscious memory all their parents behaviours and beliefs , and attitudes , and these become ‘ hard-wired ‘ as synaptic pathways in our subconscious minds .
I am sure every parent will remember the first time they heard their child curse with a word they had heard their parent use .
The correct pronunciation nuanced style and context exactly imitating what they had heard .
Given this precise behaviour recording system , imagine the consequences of hearing your parents say that you are a ‘’stupid child ‘ , you ‘ do not deserve good things ‘ , should ‘ never have been born ‘ , or that ‘’ you will never amount to anything . ‘
These comments are downloaded into the subconscious just as surely as bits and bytes are downloaded to the hard drive of your computer .Once programmed into the subconscious , these verbal abuses become defined as ‘ truths ‘ that unconsciously shape the behaviour and potential of the child throughout life .
It is possible to change these ‘ truths’ and replace them with more beneficial beliefs and behaviours , to give yourself , if not the nurturing that you would have liked , at least the same effect , by reprogramming your subconscious using hypnosis . With hypnosis you can choose which behaviours and beliefs serve you and enhance your life , and you can delete those things which are painful and detrimental , in a safe and comfortable way .
Quit the easy way with hypnosis
Quit the Easy Way
Jan Duncan Adv Dip Hypnosis
As a practising hypnotist , a large number of people contact me seeking to give up smoking . Hypnotherapy has the deserved reputation of being the best therapeutic help for smoking cessation available . It is impossible to accurately predict a success rate , however , because invariably people will forget to tell me in six months or more wether they are continuing not to smoke .
My most reliable indicator is the number of referrals that I get from successful quitters , and I get an encouraging number of those.
If you really do want to give up smoking , then Hypnosis is a very effective means to do so . You can avoid many of the drawbacks associated with giving up , for example , grouchiness , and getting the munchies , simply by programming the subconscious mind to help you quit in a very comfortable way .
If , on the other hand , you are being pressured into giving up and do not really want to stop , even Hypnosis probably won’t help you quit . Hypnosis is not mind control and unless you really want something , there is no point in doing the therapy because it most likely won’t work .
The number of sessions required to permanently quit will vary from person to person , depending on wether it is simply a habit or wether it is part of a more complex problem . The less emotional investment , the quicker the process will be . If smoking is a coping mechanism , it may take a few sessions to resolve the underlying issues , before complete success is achieved . It is not unusual to quit after only one or two sessions if it is only a habit .
A few simple questions can establish a strategy tailored for each individual , because although many of the reasons for starting to smoke in the first place are similar , for example , “ My friends were doing it and I wanted to fit in “ or “ I wanted to annoy my parents and show them they couldn’t tell me what to do .”,
and motivations for continuing range from having something to do with your hands to helping to relax , each person is a complex individual with their own hopes and aspirations .
Research Proves Hypnosis works for weightloss
RESEARCH PROVES HYPNOSIS WORKS FOR WEIGHTLOSS
By Jan Duncan , Adv . Dip Hypnosis , AMD , TFT .
Three separate studies indicate that not only does hypnosis work for weight loss , but perhaps more importantly , supports long term weght loss .
The first study , by Bolocofsky et al ,published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology , divided 109 people into two groups for a nine week study . The first group were treated with changes in diet and exercise habits only , and the second group was given exactly the same programme but was also given hypnosis for reinforcement .
After nine weeks , not surprisingly , both groups lost weight due to the changes in exercise and diet while under supervision , but what happened after the 8 month and 2-year follow-ups might surprise you .
The group that did not have hypnosis did not lose any more weight , and in fact gained most of their weight back . The hypnosis group continued to lose weight during both intervals , and the study showed that far more people in the hypnosis group met their long term weight loss goals .
The main point is that the hypnosis group continued the eating and exercise habits learned in the experiment while the non-hypnosis group did not .
The second study by Cochrane and Friesen , published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology , investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for 60 females at least 20% overweight , and not involved in other treatment . Each participant was interviewed about their family background , education , and belief in being able to be hypnotized .
The group was split into hypnosis and non- hypnosis groups , with both groups being given weight loss behavioural treatments and counseling . The results were very interesting . The group that used hypnosis lost an average of 17 pounds at the 6 month follow up . The group that did not receive hypnosis only lost half a pound .
They also found that social and educational backgrounds , and ‘’ hypnotisability ‘’ had nothing to do with the results .
In the third study by Kirsch , published in the same Journal , was a meta-analysis , which is where researchers look across multiple studies .
In the studies of hypnosis versus no hypnosis , the average short term weight loss was 6 pounds for those not using hypnosis , and 11.83 pounds with hypnosis .Even more importantly , over the long term the average weight loos without hypnosis remained at 6 pounds , but with hypnosis it jumped to 14.88 pounds – indicating again that the effects of hypnosis seem to continue over time .
The research indicates that people are losing from about 2 to 161/2 times more weight under hypnosis than when they do not use it .
Having a series of hypnosis sessions , that is from 3 – 5 sessions over a five week period you will find that the following occurs -
1 . drink more water
2 . eat more green food
3 . eat less processed food
4 . eat smaller potions
5 . feel satisfied without overeating
6 . exercise regularly
7 . stay away from foods with simple sugars
8 . and a whole lot more …
Hypnosis helps you to appreciate your journey , makes you feel good about yourself , and therefore your progress becomes fun . This really helps with emotional eating . Hypnosis puts you back in control , where it’s ok to have something wicked occasionally and not feel guilty about it .
So remember , Change your mind , and Change your life !
The hypnotic trinity
The Hypnotic Trinity
By Jan Duncan Adv Dip Hypnosis , AMD , TFT
There is an old superstition that bad things happen in threes , and also that ‘ three is the charm ‘ .
This sentiment is often regarded as an old wives tale , but for many people , that other old adage , ‘ the proof is in the pudding ‘ actually bears it out .
Hypnotists in both the stage and therapeutic professions have always known the power of a suggestion given three times , and that in a clinical situation , most people need at least three sessions to effect permanent change . There is even a name for it – the Hypnotic Trinity .
Now science has discovered what those old wives knew all along .
Research by R. Douglas Fields has revealed the mechanisms by which long term memories are created . And because the subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between what is and is not ‘ reality ‘ when a person’s eyes are closed , during a hypnotic trance positive and helpful suggestions that are made and repeated at specific time intervals become a new reality for that person .
Of course , people remember what things were like before their session , but have no trouble accepting that those old behaviours are over , and that the new ones are the new reality .
Both long- and short-term memories arise from the connections between neurons , at points of contact called synapses , where one neuron’s signal – emitting extension , called an axon , meets any of an adjacent neuron’s dozens of signal-receiving fingers , called dendrites . When a short – term memory is created , stimulation of the synapse is enough to temporarily ‘ strengthen ‘, or sensitise it to subsequent signals . For a long-term memory , the synapse strengthening becomes permanent .
Early molecular biologists discovered that genes play a role in the conversion of a memory from short- to long-term . Their experiments with animals trained to perform simple tasks demonstrated that learning required new proteins to be synthesised in the brain within minutes of training , or else the memory would be lost .In 1977 experiments by Uwe Frey of the German Federal Institute for Neurobiology , Gene Regulation and Plasticity , and Richard D. Morris of the Univerity of Edinburgh further showed that whatever these ‘ memory proteins ‘ were , they did not need to be addressed to a particular synapse – they could be broadcast through the cell but would only affect the synapse that was already temporarily strengthened , and make that connection permanently stronger .
In his laboratory at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in the US , R. Douglas Fields and post doctoral fellow Kouichi Itoh discovered how to stimulate synapses using electrical frequencies .They were then able to measure the increased response from the synapse to subsequent stimulations after it had received the first high frequency stimulus .
This increased strength , termed long term potentiation ,( LTP ) can be , despite it’s name , relatively short lived , and is the cellular model for short-term memory . However , if the same stimulus is applied repeatedly , three times in those experiments , the synapse becomes strengthened permanently , a state called late LTP .The interesting thing is that the stimuli cannot be repeated one after the other to gain this result . Instead each burst of stimulation must be followed by a period of inactivity before the same stimulus is applied , to create a permanent imprint .
Moment to moment memories necessary for operating in the present are handled well by transient adjustments in the strength of individual synapses . But when an event is important enough , or is repeated enough , synapses fire to make the neuron in turn fire neural impulses repeatedly and strongly , declaring ‘ this is an event/idea/reality that should be recorded ‘. The relevant genes turn on , and the synapses that are holding the short –term memory when the synapse – strengthening proteins find them , become , in effect , tattooed .
Many people can have a good result from just one hypnosis session , but after a few months find that the change is wearing off. Others become disheartened if they experience little or no change after one or two sessions . Science has proven what hypnotherapists have always found to be true . Most people need at least three sessions to effect permanent change . Change your mind - and change your life !
